No matter whether you’re dealing with a blockage in your shower drain, a sink that’s slow to drain, or a stopped-up toilet, a clogged drain Las Vegas is no fun. Drain clogs can happen gradually as debris accumulates without getting sufficiently removed. However, they can also happen more suddenly, such as if you put the wrong items down the sink drain or into the toilet. While drain clogs are sometimes due to mechanical problems, they are caused more often by human error. With some simple precautions, you can prevent disaster from striking in your home. Here’s how.

Be Careful What You Put Down the Drains

Just as you wouldn’t dump water in your car’s oil tank, there are some things you should never put down your home’s drains. Some of the most common “bad” items that people flush down their drains are soap residue, coffee grinds, hair, and grease. Fortunately, you can easily prevent these items from going down the drain the first place. Installing a drain grate will catch hair and soap before it goes down the drain. Cooking grease can be collected in an old coffee container or milk container and disposed of in the trash. Coffee grounds can also be collected and thrown in the garbage or added to a mulch pile.

Run Hot Water Through Your Sink

Another trick to eliminate clogs requires simply running hot water through the system after each use. Doing this keeps products moving down the drain. Eventually, they will dissolve instead of getting clogged and causing a blockage. If you have debris accumulating in the sink, you’ll notice that it is initially slow to drain. Over time, however, it gets fully clogged. Be aware, though, that if you have a garbage disposal, you’re better off using cold water for it. Running cold water through the garbage disposal keeps grease and oil in a solid form. This helps them pass through the garbage disposal. If they turn to liquid, they can cause a clog.

Work with Vinegar

If your drains have already gotten clogged, you might need to do more than simply run hot water through them. If you have foul-smelling drains or you suspect they need a thorough cleansing, try pouring a cup of vinegar down the drain. After about 30 minutes, wash hot water down the drain. This combination is effective at removing buildup in the pipes. It may even prevent the need for professional Vegas plumbing!
